Pregnancy for a lot of women is anyways very stressful and given during this time mothers are super anxious and stressed due to the rising cases of COVID-19 each day.
Pregnancy is one of the most delicate periods in a women’s life. Due to the global coronavirus spread, women have become more perplexed and unsure of what to do and what not to do.
A pregnant woman's immune system is compromised, making her more susceptible to such diseases.
It is well known that pregnant women are at a higher risk of contracting respiratory viruses than non-pregnant women.
According to CDC reports, pregnant women were more likely to be admitted to intensive care unit than non-pregnant women due to COVID-19.
There is some good news for pregnant women who may have been susceptible to the SARS-COV 2virus: a recent retrospective report on COVID 19 in the third trimester of pregnancy found that the virus does not seem to spread through the placenta from mother to fetus
However, after birth, the infant can become infectious if he or she comes into contact with an infected person, including the mother and other caregivers.
Here are few guidelines pregnant women can follow during COVID-19
1) DO NOT SKIP YOUR REGULAR CHECK-UPS
It is not advisable to skip regular check-ups and tests during pregnancy. Though it is best to choose Tele-consultancy/ online consultation for routine follow-ups.
The ICMR has recommended making mandatory visits in the 3rd 5th, 7th, and 9th months since these appointments includes fetal scans and vaccines.
A would-be mother needs to be aware of the virus, especially its symptoms so that she can take urgent action and see a doctor if they encounter any. She must therefore be aware of the method of transmission to take the appropriate steps to avoid contracting the disease.
2) EAT WELL
When considering a pregnant woman's diet, nutrition is a vital consideration for both pregnant women and infants. Due to the decreased immunity during pregnancy, it is important to consume a well-balanced and nutritious diet. A well-balanced diet improves the body's ability to fight against diseases. It is always advised to have a home-cooked and healthy meal.
3 essential food items that are advised are:
Protein- protein-rich food like eggs, soybean, rajma, paneer are highly recommended as protein will make you feel full for a longer time and is great for your babies growth.
Fruits and vegetables- well, we all know the benefits of fruits and green veggies. Make sure you consume it regularly.
Milk and curd, as these are rich in calcium.
3) PAY ATTENTION TO MENTAL HEALTH
In this stressful time, you might be more worried about yourself and your family. Just take the necessary precautions and let go of panic and stress.
Stay away from rumours and fake news related to coronavirus.
Take proper sleep to reduce anxiety.
Remain in virtual touch with your family members and friends.
Doing pranayama and meditation will help you to calm your mind and reduce anxiety.
Exercises advised by the doctor are recommended.
4) MAINTAIN PROPER HYGIENE
Another significant factor is maintaining proper hygiene, which is very necessary to prevent infections. During this vulnerable time, avoid touching your face unnecessarily. Despite thoroughly washing hands, it is important not to constantly touch your face, eyes nose, as this can be risky for both baby and mother.
5) FOLLOW ALL THE PREVENTIVE GUIDELINES
Don’t risk exposure.
Since a mother's love for her child is unconditional, there should be no opportunity to take a risk, so all expecting mothers should stay at home, be safe, and simply enjoy the forthcoming motherhood.
Avoid visiting crowded places.
Maintain social distancing.
Avoid unnecessary travelling.
Wear a double mask or an N-95 mask.
Avoid physical contact with someone who is ill or has signs to reduce the chance of infection.
Regular use of sanitiser and thorough hand wash.
Avoid touching face after coming in contact with surfaces outside your home.
