 We can estimate

• Renal function

• Dehydration

• Edema

• Fluid Retention

From the Fluid input and output chart.

The ideology of fluid balance is the amount of fluid taken should be equal to the amount excreted.

Monitoring of fluid balance is done when the patient is having

• Renal complaints

• Electrolyte imbalance

• Severe vomiting and diarrhoea

Fluid when less excreted than taken in it is called negative balance and when excreted more than intake is called positive balance.

  • Fluid is measured in Millilitres.

  • Input and output measurement is totaled every 24 hours.

  • Parenteral infusion and Fluids taken are included in the intake.

  • Urine, liquid faecal matter, vomitus are taken into account for the output measurement
