Acai berry- the super food and it’s health benefits

It’s have been ages that fruits have had a lot of heath benefits and acai berry stands out as one of the super food with loads of health benefits and still research are ongoing to unravel the hidden benefits. The acai berries are a grape-like fruit that are native to the rainforests of South America. They are deep purple in color and the taste has been described to have a blend of chocolate and berries, with a slight metallic aftertaste.

The anti-oxidant benefits of foods is typically measured by an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity(ORAC) score. The ORAC score is used to quantify the total antioxidant value of a food.

The higher is the antioxidant capacity, the lesser is the damage caused by free-radicals that are being continuously produced by our body in response to stress, life-style habits etc.

Acai berry is considered to have the highest of the ORAC score of 15,045 per 100 grams in comparison to other fruits/plant based foods.

The amazing health benefits of acai are as follows :

a) The antioxidant, anthocyanin, abundant in it can possibly lower oxidative stress and inflammation and promote cognitive functions of brain

They are also said to improve memory, increase the blood flow to brain, synaptic signalling and thereby lower the risks of neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

b) The high fibre content along with anti-oxidant activity serves to lower the bad cholesterol and thereby lower the incidence of cardiovascular diseases and slow the progression in high-risk individuals.

c) Anthocyanins have been observed to engage in anticarcinogenic activities, although the exact mechanism unknown and attributed to it’s anthocyanin content.

d) Serves to alleviate the exercise-induced muscle injury due to it’s antioxidant and serum lipid decreasing properties.

e) It is also considered to be improve skin appearance and cause weight-loss where still research are ongoing to substantiate the results.

In conclusion, acai berries should be made a part of our healthy diet due to it’s high ORAC score to experience the plethora of health benefits and also prevent the oxidative damage caused by various causative factors/stressors such as pollution, viral infection etc.
